HD DVD owners: Warner Bros. to support Bluray exclusive

You read that headline correctly; Warner Bros. has announced today that it's going to side with Blu-ray exclusively and drop all support for HD DVD. However, we will continue seeing HD DVD releases from Warner until May of this year.

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.
Quite a shocking development in the ongoing format war if I do say so myself. The recent rumors about a new Xbox 360 with a built in HD DVD drive only make this whole situation even stickier.
For those of you who have invested in either format, how does this news affect you? As someone with an HD DVD player, it's pretty unsettling, as Warner Brothers has some highly anticipated movies coming out later this year (The Dark Knight anyone?).
The way I see it, this announcement is all the more reason to get a PlayStation 3 sooner than later. What do y'all have to say on the matter?

Id had both at one point but decided to side with blu-ray because at the time it seemed the more logical thing to do and now with rumours suggesting microsoft have been planning to go HD via download only service confirms that i made the right choice. :)

The Financial Times claims that Paramount will use a "get-out clause" in its exclusivity agreement with HD DVD to follow Warner in jumping ship to Blu-ray. The paper cited "people familiar with the situation," and offered little evidence.
Paramount signed an exclusive deal last summer to distribute its films on HD DVD alongside DreamWorks Animation. The move was a blow to Sony's Blu-ray format, but the win was short-lived: just a day before CES, Warner Bros. announced it would go Blu-ray-only starting in June.
If Paramount were to have a clause to exit the agreement and end up joining Blu-ray, HD DVD's fate would be all but sealed. Currently, HD DVD counts only Paramount and Universal as major supporters, while Blu-ray is backed by Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, Sony, MGM and now Warner Bros.
It is unlikely that Universal would remain the sole HD DVD backer, leading to a complete dismantling of the format by Hollywood.
The Financial Times said it was not clear whether DreamWorks had the same clause, but noted that Paramount distributes the studio's films.
Blu-ray has been publicly asserting victory in the long-running next-generation format war, although HD DVD still offers more advanced technology with interactive features and Internet connectivity at a lower price. Blu-ray has acknowledged its sluggishness in adopting advanced features, and promised big changes in 2008 _________________
